Martha and the Squirrels
A quick word of unsolicited advice to any aspiring author-grandparent out there: never, ever write a book for your first grandchild unless you are prepared to write one for all of them.
Four grandchildren ago, I wrote a story for my first grandchild—a tale featuring a penguin, a love story, and a lot of heart (see my previous post: A Family Story). At the time, I foolishly assumed I was done. I had not factored in the glorious, relentless arrival of more grandchildren. And as any seasoned grandparent knows: what you do for one, you must do for the rest, lest you face a future union strike at family gatherings.
Which brings me to book number four!
This latest adventure was written for my youngest granddaughter—a deliciously bubbly, fearless little soul who inspired a tale every bit as spirited as she is. In this story, she embarks on a grand adventure down on Eel Pie Island, rescuing local squirrels and squaring off against the downright dastardly Mr. Ibigor (because what’s a proper story without a proper villain?).

Fantastic chapter book that my daughter loves to read to herself. It’s also her new bedtime favourite for me to read to her.
It starts when Martha accidentally kicks a stone onto JJ’s head (a girl she doesn’t know), the thrilling adventure starts immediately and doesn’t finish until the very last page. This book’s got everything my daughter loves – adventure, excitement, family, friendship and courage.
A great read.
